Hostels in Ghana

The capital city of Accra has a number of listed and well rated backpackers lodges and hostels offering all the basic amenities that one would expect. These tend to have a business-like atmosphere, and if you can find a way, lodging or camping in the vicinity of the beaches is the best way to slip into the groove. Unfortunately a lot of the beach frontage is taken up with the high priced resorts such as the Labadi Beach Hotel, that charge for access to the beach for non-residents. A few miles east is another high priced resort, the New Coco Beach, which did, at the last report, allow camping on the beach for just a few dollars.

Some 30kms in the other direction is Kokrobite Beach, which is much more budget friendly, and moreover is the home of the renowned Academy of African Music & Arts. This attracts renowned musicians and performers from all over West Africa, and is one of the global focal points of the djembe culture, with groups and individuals from all over the world checking in to learn, teach and engage. Scattered around the locality are a handful of resorts and backyard retreats for the area’s many annual visitors.

Similarly around the rest of the country there is a quiet riot of local joints and guest houses that offer a taste of humble but authentic Ghanaian life and hospitality. Within the vicinity of all the main tourist destinations a handful of lodges operated alongside cheap hotels and rest stops of similar diversity.

Once again the perennial advance is to book in advance before you arrive in Accra, and once there spend a while getting the feel of the place and plugging into the local network. No information is as current as that generated by travellers on the move, and backpackers lodges all over Africa are the main entrepót of what is hot and current.
