Budget accommodation in Botswana takes the form of camping. In Gabarone, however, a handful of cheaper hotels and lodges offer budget accommodation that will help you get on your feet and get a feel for the surroundings before you set off.
All the main tourist destination have a selection of private lodge compounds centrally located that serve the overland and truck travel trade which is a particular passion of local and South African travelers. Facilities are usually rough but quite adequate, and as rule campers have full access to the main bar, restaurant and swimming pool facilities.
The main national parks also offer cheap camping facilities, which again are extremely basic but quite functional. If you are camping in a national park do not look too hard for the bar scene. If you want to sample some of Botswana’s curiously lively nightlife it is necessary to follow the wide trail left by the main overland companies, where young travelers of all shapes and sizes gather to compare tales, dust themselves down and party for a few days before the next leg.
