Flights To Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone has two international airports, the main one being Lungi International Airport that serves the capital, and the second being Sherbro International Airport on Sherbro Island.

There are some difficulties in obtaining transport from Lungi International Airport, which is situated across the bay, to downtown Freetown. A helicopter shuttle service is the most viable means of achieving this, but current reports suggest that this has either been discontinued or is suspended. Other options include a regular ferry, but since most international flights arrive at Lungi close to or after dark, this can be a hairy ride. Common advice is to check into some of local accommodation available at Lungi and proceed onwards the following morning.

International flights to Sierra Leone are fairly limited. British Midland operates a direct service from Heathrow four times a week, besides which the only feasible access by air is via one of the surrounding regional capitals. Kenya Airways provides a link from Nairobi, Royal Air Maroc from Casablanca via Monrovia, with a handful of other regional carriers offering direct links from Banjul, Dakar, Accra, Abidjan and Conakry.

Sierra Leone also has a handful of local domestic carriers that offer a reasonably reliable scheduled domestic service.
