Flights to Ethiopia

Another of the many curiosities about Ethiopia is that, even during the bad days of the late 1970s and 1980s, Ethiopian Airlines was consistently rated as among the best airlines in the world, and perhaps with the exception of South African Airlines, the best in Africa. This is still true today, and the chances are, if you fly into Addis Ababa’sBole International Airport, you will be aboard an Ethiopian Air flight.

Ethiopian Air flies directly to Addis Ababa from Washington/Dulles International Airport, and from several airports in Europe, the Middle and Far East. Among these are London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Stockholm, Frankfurt, Rome, Paris, Dubai, Beirut, Bombay, Bangkok, Cairo, Nairobi, Accra, Lusaka and Johannesburg. Ethiopian Airlines also has a finely tuned network of connections to and from the main capitals of the surrounding sub-Saharan region.

Several other international airlines serve Addis Ababa, including KLM, Lufthansa, Emirates and Saudi Air, and a number of regional carriers likewise offer direct connections to and from most of the surrounding capitals.

A fact worth remembering is that Ethiopian Airlines serve several local destinations, offering a substantial discount on internal flights if you have entered the country on an Ethiopian Airlines flight. Bearing in mind the rigors of overland travel, and infrequency and unreliability of the general internal flight network, this is an all round excellent deal.
